Born to be Wild or Nuts Don’t Fall Far From the Tree
I am getting close to being an empty nester. My youngest son Andrew is the only one left at home. Like many parents, I have been accused of being easier on the younger children. After six children I just got worn down. My current attitude is “Hey if you are not getting arrested I’m good”.
It is also with some sense of pleasure I find that some of my children have discovered the music of my youth. Many of today’s youth have discovered classic Rock ‘n’ Roll of the sixties and seventies. Most of my sons probably know as much or more about that generation of music than I do.
This morning Andrew was painting a wall in the basement. The music he was playing was coming up into my bedroom via the laundry shute. I was hearing lyrics that I made me sort of wince. Something to the effect of “G__ D___ the pusher”. I remembered those lyrics from way back when and the shock of our parents that a band would use such language in a song. I am old enough now to not care for the lyrics myself.
Granted, Andrew wasn’t going to be arrested but I still thought I should express my feelings regarding the song. So I marched down stairs. This is what followed:
Dad: Who is that band playing?
Andrew: Steppenwolfe
Dad: I remember those lyrics from when I was your age. I am not sure they are the best to be playing in our house.
Andrew: I recorded it off of your Steppenwolfe’s Greatest Hits CD
Dad: So you say! They were a pretty good band. I got some things to do.
Ouch! I think I will go listen to my unedited version of Charlie Daniel’s “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”.

So I tried to think of something witty or wise to say. All I can come up with was that last line seriously made me laugh. “I got things to do.” What else could you say after that?
Not that I’m going to go look for it. But there’s an unedited version? What was edited? I don’t practice. Just last week I was thinking (of course, I was listening to the Emerson Drive version) that it would be cool to get the music to that song and learn how to play it. Though all of my training is violin and not fiddle. And, as previously mentioned, I am very bad at practicing.
