Bicycling and The Surf Ballroom
It was fifty years ago tonight that the music died. At least according to Don McClean. Does it have anything to do with bicycling? Why yes it does.
In 1999 I rode RAGBRAI with my brother. We spent a night in Clear Lake, Iowa. I danced with Sally Pederson , the Lt Gov of Iowa in the Surf Ballroom.
The dance was result of a dare from my bro. He didn’t think she would do it. I told him I was sure she would for many reasons. The first being that I am irresistible. The second being that she was a politician and had just finished welcoming us and telling us how wonderful Iowa was.
Put those two things together and it was a sure win bet. He got a picture of it but I don’t think I have ever seen it. You will just have to believe me.
I am sure she still remembers it. How could she possibly forget?

I was impressed with Iowa when I was there. It was clean and the people were generally very friendly.

I love folks from the midwest. My experience is that they are decent, down-to-earth and very unassuming. Actually, a couple of my very close friends are from Iowa. So I am not surprised Sally Pederson was gracious…

I love that you put your charm before her politicking;) I remember this story, but I don’t remember it being a dare from Uncle Kevin, how funny!

Inger-Lis,
Are you doubting my charm?

Gives all new meaning to a political mover and shaker.

I’m not sure I can find the picture but I can verify that the story is true. Clear Lake was one of my favorite stops during RAGBRAI.
